Amoxicillin and potassium clavulanate is a combination prescription antibiotic medication used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, such as those affecting the ears, lungs, sinuses, skin, and urinary tract. It is sold under brand names such as DIMOCLAV
How It Works
The medication combines two active components:
- Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that kills bacteria by preventing them from building their cell walls.
- Potassium clavulanate (clavulanic acid) is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Some bacteria have developed resistance to amoxicillin by producing enzymes called beta-lactamases that destroy the antibiotic. Clavulanate deactivates these enzymes, allowing the amoxicillin to work effectively against a broader range of bacteria.
Key Uses
It is used to treat specific bacterial infections, including:
- Acute bacterial sinusitis and otitis media
- Respiratory tract infections like pneumonia and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
- Urinary tract and kidney infections (cystitis, pyelonephritis)
- Skin and soft tissue infections, such as cellulitis, boils, and animal bites
- Bone and joint infections
- Dental infections
Important: This medication does not work against viral infections, such as the common cold or flu.

Common side effects may include:
- Diarrhea (can be severe in some cases)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Stomach or abdominal pain
- Mild skin rash
- Vaginal itching or discharge (yeast infection)
Warnings and Precautions
- Allergies: Do not use if you have a history of an allergic reaction to amoxicillin, penicillin-type antibiotics, or any component of the medication. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as a severe rash, itching/swelling of the face/throat, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
- Liver/Kidney Issues: Inform your doctor if you have a history of liver problems (including jaundice) or kidney disease.
- Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before taking this medicine.
- Administration: Take this medicine as directed by your doctor, usually at the start of a meal to reduce stomach upset. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment to prevent the infection from returning or worsening.
